Fuel prices - why don't they follow oil prices closely...on the way down?

It's the age old question but does anyone know why... the price of a barrel of oil goes up and we get stung immediately at the pumps, but if oil goes down it takes much longer to filter through to us.

Is it simply corporate greed?

Some good news today as supermarkets are cutting 3p L and others are following.
Retliers were crying about exchange rate differences on radio 4 but that bloke from the AA put them right as this only accounts for about 10% and prices are slowly coming down. There are still massive differences in price out there.....shop around.

There's so much competition out there, it's hard to believe they can be acting like a cartel. I agree we just need to shop around more, buy cheapest. Have you seen http://www.petrolprices.com/? It works pretty well, and there's a link from the AA website. If everyone used this, maybe prices would fall faster?

Yes but why is it that even amongst the same supermarket chain prices can vary by 5p litre depending on location yet a packet of cornflakes costs the same in any outlet. Market forces perhaps but if you happen to live in a place with no competition you get ripped off.

Did you realise that your driving licence is only valid for 10 years before you hand over another £17.50 (currently). I've setup a petition to the P.M so forward to everyone you know!

But how is DVLA supposed to fund its activities. Treasury gives them peanuts. If you want it for free then who is to pay? At least the over 70's have been told they will no longer have to pay to renew every three years!

It's not all a money making scam - mind you the £1bn Treasury made from sale of number plates could have gone towards giving DVLA enough to live on!

I think sometimes it has to do with how far you live from an oil refinery... I live in Portsmouth which is near Fawley and prices are cheaper than a lot of other places in the middle of the country. The same is true in Middlesborough which is also near a fuel depot, doesnt help everyone but maybe the transport costs are taken into account as well as supply and demand and market forces.

It seems as if most places are starting to come down again now, but still not fast enough.

Now that the fuel companies have busted through the £1 / litre barrier that had a nation up in arms not too long back, it will be hard to get it below this again.

I hate the fact that there is local variation in pricing. In reality, far from being a luxury, fuel is a neccessity and you have to wonder why prices vary so much depending upon location. If fuel companies are including transportation costs, I can't believe the cost for tanker transport are that great (compared to how much fuel is delivered by the tanker and sold). I see dramatic variations (up to 10p / L ) in prices between locations that are around 20 miles part. I don't buy the transportation cost argument - It's surely local pricing to maximise profit!

Isn't it always about profit. My dad owns shares in shell so he thinks its great, what about us poor students. Dad said the aa used to tell you where to get cheap fuel, gyess that went with the high prices

FUEL PRICES SHOULD BE LOWER NOW

If you look at the fall in Crude Oil prices, which have fallen dramatically in recent weeks, retail fuel prices should be lower now - about 99ppl.
Crude oil is priced in US$, but even taking the fall in sterling into account, retail fuel prices should be lower.

As a diesel user i've looked at the historic price using the AA's reports. Using the BBC's crude oil price & the dollar/ pound conversion the cost of crude is at its lowest point for over a year £40.5, whereas a year ago it was £44 a barrel. Prices for diesel a year ago were under 99.5p pl.

So fuel retailers why aren't you passing this on? The price should come down as quick as it went up, not profiteering.

With the good news that the price has falling again. Under $50. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can the price come down.

I do alot of mileage, and im losing about £150 a month in profit!!

But its always the same, thay sting you when it goes up within 5hrs of the info passing, and then it takes them months to bring it down to match.

I feel thay are taking the pee out us!!

I am not happy.
