Which way for road signs? Many argue there are too many signs - but signs guide us from A to B, prevent us breaking traffic rules and stop us not stopping at junctions!

The government is reviewing road sign policy and there are many conflicting views of what should be done - some call for de-cluttering and removal of all but the most esential signs whilst others call for deregulation to give highway authorities much greater flexibility with style and location of signs.
Is there too much signing clutter? which signs could stay and which could go? Should road signs be removed from rural areas? Has poor signing ever caused you grief – parking ticket, traffic fine, got lost, driven up a one way street the wrong way or worse? Should parking restriction signs be de-regulated allowing local councils the ability to choose how to sign waiting restrictions? How do you regulate traffic in towns with fewer signs? Should there be more variable message signs that change with the hours of restriction so drivers only get one clear message not a sea of confusing information? Perhaps motorway signs should be green instead of blue? |

The worst thing is obsured signs that you can't see due to trees or dirt.
I also find afew signs that have been turned around on rural roads and point in the wrong direction. I guess many people think that with Sat Nav you don't need signs but I think signs to special events that might not be on the sat nav system are useful. |

The most irritating thing is when you're following direction signs to a town and then you come to a roundabout with lots of exits but not a single sign that mentions the town you're aiming for.
It's like the town suddenly disappeared! Do the local councils do this deliberately I wonder - or perhaps the signs are being stolen? |

These days drivers are bombarded with way too much non relevant info. Also road planners also seem to delight in making some road junctions as complicated as possible. That's my view but I might just be getting too old to take it all in

Some junctions are understandable on paper but when driving you don't have time to work them out. Some roads have signs for many years then for no apparent reason someone decides to change the layout. Signs should be easy to understand and not obstructed. Councils should stick to standard signs that are clear to understand.

Far to many signs around road junctions - need to be prioritised and simplified. Too many signs distract drivers eyes from the road - hence possibility of accidents increases. So fewer signs please

Yes exactly. I imagine some road planners never actually do a test run with people that are new to that location before the signs are made permanent. |
