Many times I see motorists parked for long periods of time with dipped headlamps burning away. Now apart from being illegal when parked on public roads, the battery and charging system is getting a hammering for no good reason.

Worse is when the same motorist just switches engine off and goes indoors after sitting parked after having headlamps on for x amount of time. Doesn't really give the battery a chance for some charge, especially in winter.

If i have had to drive for a relatively short time 5-10 mins, and have had to have my headlights on, when i get to my destination i usually switch off my lights and let the engine 'run' for 2-3 minutes to 'recharge' the battery. I dont know if this works, but it gives me a bit of 'peace of mind'.

Puts some extra charge in the battery for sure. Just may make all the difference when you come back out on an icy evening/morning and need that extra grunt from the battery.
