You may have a missfire caused by faulty spark plugs or the spark plug leads.

there is a common fault with the spark plug leads on these age vw models,they have metal chrome supressors fitted near the spark plug end of the lead,these over time cause the spark to short out to earth causing a misfire.remove these shrouds and try the car if it cures the fault have new leads fitted hope this is some help
