Is your car under 2 years old, or less than 20,000 miles on the clock? Have you had to replace the brake discs? It came as a shock to me when I was told mine needed replacing (worn and corroded) on a Vauxhall Astra, 2 years old and only 12,300 miles on the clock. Over the last 20 years I have owned 6 Vauxhalls, and never had to replace pads, let alone discs, even after 30,000 miles. These have all been stored, serviced and driven the same way. My driving pattern has not changed, so what has? Even allowing for the fact that pads are now harder this is ridiculous. On this basis it means the discs are wearing before the pads and for the motorist doing average mileage it could mean a disc change at each annual service. Great for the servicing industry! After asking around, and a little research, it appears this problem is also happening with other models and manufacturers. This all points to a decline in quality of the factory fitted discs, and even maybe the replacement parts. Has anyone else had this problem and what can we do about it?

I have the same problem - used to drive a vectra for 8 years - 100k miles only had the brakediscs changed twice.
My Ford Focus went in for service this week and informed I need to replace worn discs! Its less than 2 years old. I am a lightfooted lady driver therefore nothing to do with my driving ( salesman suggested been heavy on the brake!) Am unsure to go ahead or not, doesnot want to compromise my and family's safety. My decision is to ask an independant garage to have a look and take his trusted advice - even if this costs me more ( |
