Worries about safety featured in the top two hates in a recent AA/Populus survey with tailgating (driving too close to the car in front) cited by 30%, closely followed by talking on the mobile phone whilst driving cited by 26%.

My pet hate is undertakers. Not the people who drive hearses, but those who swoosh past you on the left when you can go no faster in your lane due to weight of traffic

People who try to join a motorway (from a slip road) and think (or at least drive like) they have right of way (i.e. signal and move on to carriage way assuming motorists have seen them an will make way for them).

Ok, my pet hates are as follows:
1. People who sit in the middle lane for no reason. 2. People who slow down to join the motorway instead of trying to match the speed of the cars using it. (Same as Lifecycle) 3. People on mobile phones. 4. People not signalling, expecially on roundabouts. These are but a few, but can't think of any more at the moment, just wait til I get home, I will have some more then

shouldn't YOU be in the left lane then? |

Middle and outside-lane hoggers. It's just rude, causes unnecessary delay and resentment. You know who you are!

Has to be:
- people using hand-held mobile phones - people who suddenly realise they are passing their exit on the motorway and try to cut across all lanes to get off - people who blatantly ignore 30mph limits in built up areas - especially in the road I live in where we have had a couple of nasty accidents - lorry/van drivers who don't know the height of their own vehicle and strike bridges, not least the one under the spine road in Basingstoke that leads to Basing View!!! |

I agree with KitKat - too many people think of the lanes as slow middle and fast,
(like swimming pool lanes!). I think you should keep left, unless you're overtaking someone. That way you shouldn't get 'under-taken'. Actually that goes for swimming lanes too. |

Drivers who, rather than wait in a busy left lane on the approach to a roundabout in order to take the first/left exit off the roundabout, will dart up the empty right lane, circumnavigate the roundabout 360°+ before taking the first exit, thus, contributing further to the congestion. If we could put a stop to this act, I'm convinced it would be a major contribution to road safety.

Number one problem on our motorways is the idiots who hog the middle lane when the inside lane is empty. On stretches of the M25, where there are more than 3 lanes, you get fools hogging the 3rd/4th lanes and this can be a massive problem where slow vehicles just clog up the system for everybody else. I know undertaking is frowned upon but I can understand drivers' frustration in such cases because it happens all the time; it's a huge problem.
The highway code states that vehicles should return to their lane after overtaking, I think it should be made law: proper use of cameras would actually genuinely increase safety if we clocked every car that sauntered down the middle lane while the slow lane was empty. Slapping fines on these miscreants would clear our motorways and we wouldn't need to "invest" in widening roads that are already wide enough. Number two issue is people on mobile phones whilst driving. It's especially infuriating to see morons in £60,000 cars who can't afford a hands-free kit. Ban them from driving for a year, that'll teach them. People who don't indicate when changing lanes, or turning at roundabouts/junctions. Drivers who have no manners, no gratitude. Drivers who constantly switch lanes in traffic jams. Those fools who don't leave a distance between them and the next car and are constantly stop/starting. The same morons who dive into your braking distance just because there's a gap big enough for their car to squeeze in. (so you leave a braking distance and then another muppet dives in etc etc) Drivers who race to the end of a queue to get ahead when everybody else is politely getting into single file. Miserable drivers with faces like wet weekends who can't laugh about all the aforementioned peeves
And then there's the problems I face when I'm on my mountain bike (Obviously not doing 70mph down the M25) - I've only one thing to say about this - make every driver ride a bike through traffic before handing them their driving licence. |

So there i was this morning quiet happily driving in the fog along the A3 when some bright person thought they would pull out of a lay by at the slowest possible speed in front of me, causing me to break suddenly...... without indicating of course!!!!!!
Another driver that thinks they are the only one on the road! |

I really hate people (usually in souped up old bangers) who tailgate me. They usually overtake at the first opportunity, often at traffic lights or in dangerous places, why is there never a police car around when this happens????

people who expect you to drive into the hedge to let them pass in their big shiny 4x4s that they can't drive and then don't say thank you when you do so. Usually mums on their way to the big posh school further up the lane.
the school run at the top of the hill on my way to work where all the mothers expect you to let them cross in front of you, having caused the traffic jam every morning in the first place - if I can block one or more of them, then I consider it a good start to the morning! of course, I am perfect |

people that turn right at a left only junction (the one outside AA cheadle, in particular) not only does it create a queue for people that actually aren't breaking the law or actually wanting to turn left, but its a hazard for pedestrians on an already busy road.

Turning right at a roundabout from the left hand lane.
Winchester Road roundabout, Basingstoke, is a classic example. The right hand lane has some traffic in so people fly past in the left lane and go all the way round, making it impossible for those in the correct lane to merge in to the outer lane for the exit. Infuriates me. |

You're so right about souped up Micras Aggressive_Replanner. What's all that about?
As for other pet hates, where do I start? People who use bus lanes to undertake - why do they never get caught? White-van men who insist on tooting in Tooting, just because they think it's funny. Learner drivers when I'm late for work. People on the hunt for an on-street parking space. Girls who insist on using their rearview mirrors only to do their mascara. People who are hell-bent on gouging out the contents of their noses while sat in the car thinking no-one else can see them... well I have news for you, we can! But we really, really don't want to. |

BMW drivers who think they own the road, I drive a Volvo doesn't everybody understand that we do!
Middle lane hoggers - buy cruise control or get out of the way... Clapped out Saxos with big exhausts, spend the money on a decent car instead And finally, People who change lanes without warning, which includes those who think an indicator means you can go where you like regardless of lane discipline and everyone else just gets out of their way!!! |
