Worries about safety featured in the top two hates in a recent AA/Populus survey with tailgating (driving too close to the car in front) cited by 30%, closely followed by talking on the mobile phone whilst driving cited by 26%.

What's your pet hate?

my pet hate is people who tailgate, it really gets me frustrated.

what i usually do if it's safe, is to pull over and let them zoom past.

i could understand tailgating if the people they're tailgating are not keeping up with the flow of traffic, but from what i've noticed, the tailgaters are people who are just in one mad rush and will drive at whatever speed they like, regardless of other drivers.

Tailgating seems to be getting worse, White Van Man has always done it of course, (probably genetic!) but now it seems to be the norm. Near where I live there is a 30mph speed camera, which I go through at 29mph by my speedo,(which may or may not read a bit optimistic.) Very often there is a car four feet off my back bumper with the driver flapping his or her hands about in that gesture that I think is supposed to indicate exasperation. The question is, do they want to go faster and get nicked,or do they know that there is a bit of "lee-way" on the camera and they can get away with 35mph?.

I've no doubt that the reason other drivers are undertaking you is because you think lanes 2 and 3 are the fast lanes and YOU sit in them blocking the flow of traffic. THEY'RE OVERTAKING LANES, MOVE OVER!!!

1. People who drive at 35mph in a 40mph zone, but then carry on driving at 35mph when the limit drops to 30mph, it clearly shows that they don't pay any attention to what's going on around them.

2. Baby on board signs; do these drivers think that having one of these in their car absolves them of all responsibility to drive sensibly, thinking that other motorists will take extra care to make up for their ineptness?

I don't go round purposely crashing into people but then have a sudden change of heart when I see one of these signs; regardless of whether a baby is on board or not, people should be taking the upmost care anyway!

3. People who ignore your hazard lights in Fanum House car park; when indicating that you want to stop and reverse into a space but the person behind carries on so that they end up too close behind you to be able to reverse into a space, I don't put my hazard lights on to make my car look prettier - it's for a reason.

Cyclists riding two or more abreast

Cyclists who think/believe the rules of the road/traffic lights/signs don't apply to them

Cyclists who ride in the middle of the road

Council grass cutters who spray grass and stones all over my car with their strimmers every time that they pass through.
People who smash their car doors into mine when I am in the supermarket.
Builders who scatter nails and screws like confetti all over the road every time they get out of their vans
People who take a chance and jump the red light at road works because they think that they can see the other end is clear.

how long have you got?

Biggest hate is drivers who appear to have left their brain with their driving license and common sense!

No lane discipline on motorways and usually totally oblivious to every other vehicle on the road that's trying to get past them.

Tailgaters - if I wanted you to get that close, there's be an invitation on my boot lid! Back off and give me some space - if I have to brake hard, I really don't want them in the back seat.

No knowledge on basic functions on their car - what do some drivers think the twinkly little orange things are on the front and rear of their cars? Fairy lights? They certainly don't seem to understand they are for indicating to other road users what their intentions are.

Courtesy and consideration - there are some really lovely drivers out there who will allow you to filter in queues instead of inching you into a hedge or ditch rather than give two feet of roadway. It also make syou glad you let someone in when they smile and say thanks rather than completing ignoring you or giving you a look that says 'whatever'.

Parents who use the hard shoulder as a toilet area for their kids - that's what service stations are for or pull off and find somewhere safer.

Parents who allow their kids to bounce around the car rather than being properly strapped in. Apparently, this is the most precious thing in the world to them and yet they put them in that sort of danger. Why not just them play on the dual carriageway???

Drivers who treat their mobile phone like an umbilical cord. It is NOT neccessary to use when driving, it is illegal and one of the most dangerous practices on the road. There ought to be a phoneline where you can (when legal) phone in the registration number and report the idiots who make the raods so dangerous for the rest of us.

I'm not a perfect driver by any means but I do try and obey the rule sof the road and drive in a way that makes mine and others journeys that bit more pleasant.

Check out latest edition of Autocar as I spotted an Autocar/AA Drive Better Campaign which outed "tailgating" as number one irritation of drivers. I hate those idiots who sit on your tail in road works with average speed cameras....what are you supposed to do? They have no brains.

People who park on double yellows with their hazards flashing while they pop into a shop. How lazy can you get?

People who drive with their boot open and a load of junk in the boot unsecured, but think it's ok because they have their hazards on.

People who come up behind while I'm overtaking on a dual carriageway (at the speed limit) and flash and indicate right as if to say 'I'm more important than you, get out of my way!' mostly mercedes/audi drivers

People who modulate their speed. Pick a speed and stick to it!

Farm traffic driving slowly not pulling over to let people past, although a lot of tractor drivers do pull over every few miles there are those who just keep going on and on and on.

People who brake as a reflex action when they see a speed camera, even if they are well within the limit. This also applies to average speed cameras!

((The white van driver on the A1 who puked out of his window at 60mph as I was approaching to overtake while I had my drivers window open! Thanks, I've been ill for the best part of a week!))
