Worries about safety featured in the top two hates in a recent AA/Populus survey with tailgating (driving too close to the car in front) cited by 30%, closely followed by talking on the mobile phone whilst driving cited by 26%.
What's your pet hate? |

my pet hate is people who tailgate, it really gets me frustrated.
what i usually do if it's safe, is to pull over and let them zoom past. i could understand tailgating if the people they're tailgating are not keeping up with the flow of traffic, but from what i've noticed, the tailgaters are people who are just in one mad rush and will drive at whatever speed they like, regardless of other drivers. |

Tailgating seems to be getting worse, White Van Man has always done it of course, (probably genetic!) but now it seems to be the norm. Near where I live there is a 30mph speed camera, which I go through at 29mph by my speedo,(which may or may not read a bit optimistic.) Very often there is a car four feet off my back bumper with the driver flapping his or her hands about in that gesture that I think is supposed to indicate exasperation. The question is, do they want to go faster and get nicked,or do they know that there is a bit of "lee-way" on the camera and they can get away with 35mph?.

I've no doubt that the reason other drivers are undertaking you is because you think lanes 2 and 3 are the fast lanes and YOU sit in them blocking the flow of traffic. THEY'RE OVERTAKING LANES, MOVE OVER!!!

1. People who drive at 35mph in a 40mph zone, but then carry on driving at 35mph when the limit drops to 30mph, it clearly shows that they don't pay any attention to what's going on around them.
2. Baby on board signs; do these drivers think that having one of these in their car absolves them of all responsibility to drive sensibly, thinking that other motorists will take extra care to make up for their ineptness? I don't go round purposely crashing into people but then have a sudden change of heart when I see one of these signs; regardless of whether a baby is on board or not, people should be taking the upmost care anyway! 3. People who ignore your hazard lights in Fanum House car park; when indicating that you want to stop and reverse into a space but the person behind carries on so that they end up too close behind you to be able to reverse into a space, I don't put my hazard lights on to make my car look prettier - it's for a reason. |

Council grass cutters who spray grass and stones all over my car with their strimmers every time that they pass through.
People who smash their car doors into mine when I am in the supermarket. Builders who scatter nails and screws like confetti all over the road every time they get out of their vans People who take a chance and jump the red light at road works because they think that they can see the other end is clear. |

how long have you got?
Biggest hate is drivers who appear to have left their brain with their driving license and common sense! No lane discipline on motorways and usually totally oblivious to every other vehicle on the road that's trying to get past them. Tailgaters - if I wanted you to get that close, there's be an invitation on my boot lid! Back off and give me some space - if I have to brake hard, I really don't want them in the back seat. No knowledge on basic functions on their car - what do some drivers think the twinkly little orange things are on the front and rear of their cars? Fairy lights? They certainly don't seem to understand they are for indicating to other road users what their intentions are. Courtesy and consideration - there are some really lovely drivers out there who will allow you to filter in queues instead of inching you into a hedge or ditch rather than give two feet of roadway. It also make syou glad you let someone in when they smile and say thanks rather than completing ignoring you or giving you a look that says 'whatever'. Parents who use the hard shoulder as a toilet area for their kids - that's what service stations are for or pull off and find somewhere safer. Parents who allow their kids to bounce around the car rather than being properly strapped in. Apparently, this is the most precious thing in the world to them and yet they put them in that sort of danger. Why not just them play on the dual carriageway??? Drivers who treat their mobile phone like an umbilical cord. It is NOT neccessary to use when driving, it is illegal and one of the most dangerous practices on the road. There ought to be a phoneline where you can (when legal) phone in the registration number and report the idiots who make the raods so dangerous for the rest of us. I'm not a perfect driver by any means but I do try and obey the rule sof the road and drive in a way that makes mine and others journeys that bit more pleasant. |

Check out latest edition of Autocar as I spotted an Autocar/AA Drive Better Campaign which outed "tailgating" as number one irritation of drivers. I hate those idiots who sit on your tail in road works with average speed cameras....what are you supposed to do? They have no brains.

People who park on double yellows with their hazards flashing while they pop into a shop. How lazy can you get?
People who drive with their boot open and a load of junk in the boot unsecured, but think it's ok because they have their hazards on. People who come up behind while I'm overtaking on a dual carriageway (at the speed limit) and flash and indicate right as if to say 'I'm more important than you, get out of my way!' mostly mercedes/audi drivers People who modulate their speed. Pick a speed and stick to it! Farm traffic driving slowly not pulling over to let people past, although a lot of tractor drivers do pull over every few miles there are those who just keep going on and on and on. People who brake as a reflex action when they see a speed camera, even if they are well within the limit. This also applies to average speed cameras! ((The white van driver on the A1 who puked out of his window at 60mph as I was approaching to overtake while I had my drivers window open! Thanks, I've been ill for the best part of a week!)) |

'Cyclists who ride in the middle of the road' are often just skirting puddles, potholes, raised drain covers and other roadside hazards. I'm sorry you hate us; but I assure you the minor inconvenience we may occasionally cause you as you whiz by is as nothing compared to the terror you inspire in us as you whiz a tad too close.
Please - we average 13 mph and 80 kg including vehicle. Injury potential to other road users, virtually nil. When I have no choice I drive my BMW 320. On a single-carriageway road out of town, 60 mph and about 1700 kg. Injury potential to other road users truly awesome. |

Check your Highway Code. If you can see the other end of road works are clear, you are permitted to cross a red light!

People who insist on overtaking me even though I am at the legal speed limit, usually breaking the speed limit to do so... then have the gall to give me hate looks as if I was holding them up!
People who drive into petrol stations from the opposite direction and straight into a pump bay which I had waited ages at for my turn and about to enter myself! Tailgaters, especially on dual carriageways when I am overtaking another vehicle and am at the legal speed limit. I hate when they rush up behind me obviously going too fast, expect me to speed up or move over even though I am half way through the manouvre and it`s not safe to move over and illegal to speed up... what do they expect me to do if I have to brake suddenly and they are right up my rear bumper? Lorry drivers who flash their lights into my car nearly blinding me in my rear view mirror, just because they come around a bend at faster speed than the legal limit for the road and find themselves almost kissing my car`s backside and expect me to break rules so they don`t have to slow down! I understand they can`t slow down as quick as I can but they shouldn`t be going too fast in the first place. People who zoom past me at 50mph plus on a local 30 mph road seemingly just because the limit changes to 60 further down the road. Sorry but it`s still 30 until the national speed limit sign!... also on the same road, people who won`t wait for me to get from 30 to 60 and overtake me right at the speed change sign, then force me to slow down again by cutting me up once they pass! Night drivers who won`t drop their lights from full beam when approaching from the opposite direction, so by the time I pass them I`m almost blinded and unable to see properly for some time afterwards. The guy who regularly beeps his horn, shouts and swears at me for going 20mph in a 20mph limit... People who think it`s funny to harrass and intimidate learner drivers forgetting they were one once... male drivers who think it`s funny to harrass and intimidate female drivers... people who think it`s funny to scare horses or intimidate riders and cyclists... the list goes on! I`m a fairly new driver of just over a year and do my best to obey road rules and speed limits etc, but am amazed at the number of drivers who think they own the roads and couldn`t care less about other road users! |

I hate those too...What I do when it's safe is switch my windshield washer on :0) It squirts onto the one tailgating and honestly, they get a message.
Sometimes you have to be harsh, only of course when it's safe. |

My number one pet hate is; No signals, and especially at roundabouts. (Vans & BMW drivers are the worst, followed by taxi & bus drivers. The last two catagories are SUPPOSE to be 'professionals'
Number 2 is; Driving in the middle lane of the motorway for no apparant reason. Number 3 is; Slow moving vehicles, esp, tractors, who can pull in to laybys, but choose not to. Number 4 is; When I am riding my bike and manouvering through slow queues of cars, and some drivers block my path intentionally. This only applies to car and van drivers. Is it that they are jealous that I am moving when they are not? Perhaps they ought to get a bike, if they can handle one. But looking at their driving 'skills', I doubt it very much that they could handle two wheels. |

What I hate is when you phone the AA, they tell you that a) they won some award three times in a row, b) blurb about using your mobile safely, c) you have to listen all five options before you can press a key .... and then they tell they are busy and to phone back later.
WHAT'S WRONG WITH A BLOODY ENGAGED TONE IN THE FIRST PLACE? What brain dead twit is in charge of this stuff????? |

people driving in the middle lane of the moroway when they are clearly NOT overtaking. i have got to my distantion far quicker on many occasions due to drving in the inside lane (not thru speeding) becuase it is SOOOO clear because everyone is in the middle and outside lane. sometime i can go miles and miles without coming upto another car in my lane while there are lots in the middle
loadsa o' fun watching all those middle lane hoggers stuck in the middle lane behind each other. lol. bye bye ![]() |
