Worries about safety featured in the top two hates in a recent AA/Populus survey with tailgating (driving too close to the car in front) cited by 30%, closely followed by talking on the mobile phone whilst driving cited by 26%.
What's your pet hate? |

Hey all, this is my very first post on here!!
I'm a 'proffesional' driver, covering about 120,000 miles a year, delivering and collecting cars, sometimes using trade plates (hence my screen name!!). Pet hates - 1) Middle lane hoggers - PLEASE, it's an overtaking lane, if you can return to the left lane for 10 seconds or longer before needing to pull out again, DO SO!! (oh, incidentally, it's completely LEGAL for anyone to undertake anyone else, as long as the undertaker is NOT breaking the speed limit at the time.) 2) Drivers changing lanes without signalling. 3) Very slow vehicles that do not pull over, ever!! (tractor drivers are especially good at this one) 4) Litter louts - why do people just throw their rubbish out? You know who you are!! Think that about it for now, I'm sure i'll think of more as time goes on!! Cheers all, be careful out there!! Paul. |

1. People overtaking you at speed and then slowing down for a safety camera,if you are big enough to break the speed limit, why are you scared of the camera?
2. People who turn out of a junction and make people who are observing the speed limit slow down,if you have`nt got time to make your manoevre, dont. 3. Bus drivers who pull out from their stop when you are just about to overtake them, the code states we must let you out, but please give us a chance to do so. 4. People who park in disabled bays who dont need to, disgusting! 5. Supermarkets that have dedicated child/toddler parking bays near to the entrance, parents make the choice to have children, put the bays furthest away........nothing to do with peoples` driving, but still a pet hate. |

I suggest plated driver re-reads his highway code re (oh, incidentally, it's completely LEGAL for anyone to undertake anyone else, as long as the undertaker is NOT breaking the speed limit at the time.)
As someone who drives for the emergency services I would not recommend he tries this as an excuse infront of a traffic officer. Read section 268 of the Highway code which clearly states "Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic on your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake." Further more section 267 states "overtake only on the right". "proffesional driver" needs to re-check his traffic law! |

Aaaahhh, somewhere to vent my frustrations
1. Driving around with FOG LIGHTS ON. This used to be restricted to BMW 3 series coupes, Saxos, Clios and any other modified/sporty boy racer vehicle but more and more people are doing it. I've seen many women, elderly and all types doing this particularly in the rain. Read the highway code, stop dazzling others. It's driving me mental. 2. Slow drivers. Not people sticking to the speed limit and i'm in a hurry it's the 20mph through 30 zones and speed cams; 40-45mph on 60mph people. Any time of the day I'm held up by this type of driving. Mostly middle aged-elderly drivers, lots of elderly gentlemen, in cars such as; Suzuki Wagon R, Nissan Micra, old Rovers, Nissan Note, Ford Fusion (the most boring car ever designed) etc etc. Get a move on or pull in to the layby and let the huge tailback in your mirror get past!!!! Rant over. ![]() |

My pet hate when driving is when someone goes into the "safe distance" I put between myself and the car in front! That brings me to tailgaters - need I say more? Worst of all is the driver who thinks he doesn't need to signal his intentions - sorry I failed my mind-reading O Level
My philosophy is to always regard other motorists as complete numpties (old Scots word for idiots) - I am never disappointed! |

Before you read the below, I don't ride a motorbike, I don't ride a bicycle, I drive a 3 year old estate that isn't modified. I'm not a learner, I don't unertake or tailgate. Hope that stops any of the majority of the most basic rebuttles.
Everyone moaning about people doing up cheap cars - this is about driving not other people's actual cars you snobs. The person moaning about learner drivers slowing them down - guess what, you and everyone else on the road was a learner once, dick. People who moan about undertaking. I don't do it personally, but if you're in lane 3 and someone has enough time to safely move into lane 2, pass you and pull back into lane 3, then you had enough time to move over for 5 seconds so they can overtake, you selfish cock. Cyclists who ignore the rules of the road and lean against cars at traffic lights. You can't go through a red light, you can't cycle on a pavement, you can't cycle the wrong way down a one way system. etc Motorists who don't look when changing lanes. Motorists who purposefully move towards the lane markings if there is a motorcyclist filtering down it. Saw this happen on the M27 the other day, I and a few other drivers moved over for a bike to filter down it and then I see a big white ford galaxy change lanes with no indicators forcing the motorcyclist to do an emergency stop, and then the driver gives the motorcyclist the V fingers... And when the cyclist went to overtake the galaxy driver swerved the car again to scare the biker. Bloody infuriating. People who tailgate, and people who overtake you in retaliation and then slam on the brakes if you slow down when they tailgate. People who use their rear-view mirror as a make up mirror. I believe this is the reason the horn was first invented. People who moan about large/loud exhausts on motorbikes (talking to you Horneteer), I'm sure bikers would rather have someone saying "oi you*****, your bike is too loud" on a messageboard than "sorry mate, didn't see you" as you are laying on a spinal board going into the back of an ambulance. No need to be so selfish Horneteer. People who hog the middle lane during rush hour / day time. People who moan about people who hog the middle lane at night / when the road is empty. I'd rather be able to swerve into a lane in each direction in the middle of the night when there is an obstacle on the road, than just one, if there's no other cars for this to affect. People who moan and condemn speeding in any situation, no matter what they say speeding is wrong, and then they drive at 70mph on the motorway in heavy rain and fog, or they drive at 30mph past a school at 3pm... People who moan about 4wd "petrol eating road monsters" (winston fiesta), the petrol eating road monsters usually pay 4x as much in VED as you do, and it usually comes down to envy, you would drive one if you could afford it. I definitly would. ThePondicherryPirates, who in their right mind would think that hazard lights indicate your intention to reverse into a parking space. You should put your car in reverse so your reversing lights show, and indicate in the direction of the space. You're just confusing people, they're probably moving closer to you to try and give you a subtle hint that it's not cool to put your hazards on and park in the middle of a car park as this is much more common than someone using hazards as an indication of reversing into a space. Jesus Master_Chef, you are a goldmine; firstly ever thought that the car with hazards flashing might be making a delivery - well within the law or might be an on-call doctor responding to a medical emergency? Second, if you're overtaking at the speed limit and it's taking you a minute to overtake someone you should have just dropped your speed 1mph and kept behind, or acted like any other reasonable driver and sped up 5mph to make the overtaking maneuver? Sure they shouldn't flash you, but you're just as bad as they are. "people who modulate their speed", did you get your license in a box of corn flakes? There's all sorts of reasons to modulate speed; road surface, weather, other drivers, pedestrians, dogs, cyclists, oh and overtaking, although I didn't think you'd get that one somehow. boyfromnowhere, in response: 1. because it's nothing to do with being "big", in certain circumstances speeding is perfectly safe, but speed cameras don't differentiate between safe driving and unsafe driving, just speeding, unlike a traffic officer. 3. if the bus is ready to pull out and is indicating, why are you still overtaking them. 5. I'm sure when you grow up and have kids you will appreciate how hard it is to push a trolley and a pram/carry a baby/watch over a toddler whilst also dodging cars that come zooming down the car park aisles, or come reversing out of bays suddenly. People moaning about drivers slowing down for speed cameras, I'd rather slow your journey down by 5mph for 10 seconds than risk my speedo underreading and myself ending up with a big fine, 3 points and a massively bumped up insurance premium next year. You are not king/queen of the world. |

Of all the little annoyances caused by other people's driving, it has to be the failure to indicate which ranks as my pet hate. It shows a complete disregard for other road users. How many times have I wasted a chance to pull out of a side road or onto a roundabout while the person to whom I think I'm giving way turns left, quite oblivious to the fact that I've been waiting needlessly for them?!

Quoting Lifecycle (22/08/2008 @ 09:31:48): People who try to join a motorway (from a slip road) and think (or at least drive like) they have right of way (i.e. signal and move on to carriage way assuming motorists have seen them an will make way for them).
It's not always the case that the slip road does not have right of way. For example, in portsmouth the Eastern road junction joining the eastbound A3M/A27 divide. The slip road is 2 lanes and one merges into the left hand lane of the A27, meaning that the car on the slip road has no option. |

What drives me nuts is when, on heavily parked streets, where there's only enough room for one car to get through, impatient, bad tempered drivers see you coming....on your side of the road....and speed up to whip your right of way off you....then shake their heads that you stopped at an inconvenient place for them to pass!!
Aaarrgghhh!!!!!! |
