Cowboy Clampers

One of these cowboys clamped my sister last week. She is a health visiter working in Acton, W London. She parked next to a road on what looked like the public highway. There was no sign in the bays but further down the road was a sign saying private parking. It appeared this sign meant the block of flats behind. The cowboys turned up and clamped and pretended that they had called out a tow truck so they could up the "fine" to £170. This is legalised mugging. She said she would not have parked there if there was a sign. But becasuse this is on private land there is no right of appeal. These cowboys need to be outlawed.

Hi everyone-my sympathies with all of you who have suffered due to these malicious cowboy clampers. I was also clamped recently and had to pay
£150 + VAT! I can tell you it was the most distressing experience on a Sunday! Also I would like to refute the comment of the clamper who wrote in-honestly, I am sure the majority of motorists do not park on private land to save money- they park there accidentally because they believe it is public land; the signs and warnings are ridiculously small and I am sure designed to catch motorists out. (This is what happened to me-only later was a small, dirty sign pointed out to me+ the clamper was very rude, inflexible and abusive and the people on the phone at their company were just the same-if I didn't pay, they were threatening to tow away my car.) At the end of the day, I think people could even live with a fine-but why are clampers so rude, threatening and aggressive-you wouldn't kick a patient out of hospital if he couldn't pay the bill-so why threaten vulnerable people with towing away their cars and holding us to ransom? I couldn't pay straightaway, but said I would pay on Monday directly at the clamper's office, but they are such greedy obnoxious people they won't be fair at all. Questions (maybe the AA experts could advise) 1. Why is clamping illegal in Scotland, but not in England-do we have fewer rights as motorists here? Surely a sensible law implemented in Scotland can be applied throughout the UK and vice versa? 2. Why don't the police help? They say it is a civil matter-but surely a clampers harassing you mentally and being abusive should be stoppeda clamper 3. Most importantly; is there any way we can support organisations such as the AA and RAC which stand-up for motorists, to get the government to change the law and make clamping illegal as in Scotland or at least very tightly regulated and a reasonable fine should be charged (if at all)? And people should be given time to pay their fine, rather than being thrown out onto the street! |
