Lets see more support for lowering the speed limit on rural lanes and roads. It is nonsense that one can legally drive at 60 mph down a small country lane not wide enough for two cars to pass. If the national speed limit was 30 mph, and that all roads where you could do more than 30 had to be signed then there would be a reduction in speed along unsuitable roads. At present the message is go a s fast as you can unless limited. A different culture would prevail if you could only drive faster where it was signed that you could. It would also do away with all of these challenges to the speeding prosecutions when one of the signs was too far from the next. I am not necessarily advocating that all roads should have lower speed limits. But the highway authority would have to assess all roads to set the appropriate speed limit for that road. I am not advocating the red flag, just more conscious driving

I disagree, what is needed is to educate drivers how to curb their speed as conditions / roads change.
We have enough of a nanny state as it is - whatever happened to people using commen sense, and also accepting the consecenses of our own actions. These days it seems to be all "It's not my fault!" but when you get behind the wheel of a car it's your responsibilty how you drive not the government's. |

What a load of controlling twaddle! Teach people to drive properly and you would not need limits at all. Talk to an "experienced old hand" traffic cop and they will tell you that speeding in its self is not the issue, it is inappropriate speed is the problem. Speed limits have to be enforceable and need to be relevant.
Perhaps you would like to see each bit of straight at one speed and a sign at each corner advising the approaching driver with a new limit! What fun, cameras on every road and corner. Imagine the problems with all that extra signage, trying to remember and watching speeds rather than the road ahead, not forgetting the visual environmental impact. Drivers need to control and be in control of their vehicles and not be encouraged to have anyone else to “blame”. (for the record, 51 years old a rally driver & a clean licence from 17). |

Surely speed limits are a maximum not a minimum?
60mph means you can drive at speeds up to 60mph not that you have to try to keep as close to that speed irrespective of how narrow or winding the road becomes. Right speed for the conditions up to but not exceeding 60mph seems quite simple and sensible to me. There might of course be some stretches of road where accident statistics show that a lower maximum speed limit should be applied.

I am sending this message on behalf of ITV’s television show - Police, Camera, Action. They would like to contact anyone would like to participate in a new episode? Please see below...
We are currently making a new series of four one hour specials due to be broadcast on ITV next year (2010). One of the episodes that we are producing is on speeding, and we would like to hear from people who would like to experience driving on the Autobahn in Germany, for the purpose of reaching speeds that you can’t in the UK. Applicants must be aged 25 or over and have at least 5 years of driving experience, a valid passport and be available to travel to Germany on Friday 13th November/Sat 14th November. If you are interested and want to take part in our filming, please email rachael.stubins@optomen.com with some contact details and someone from the team will be in touch. Thank you |
