I think i have the answer for saving 100s of lifes. As an hgv lorry driver we have a speed limiter fitted which allows us to go no faster than 56mph.Why does the government not make it compulsary for all vehicles to be fitted with limiters. The fastest anyone needs to go in this country is 70mph so this should be the max setting. The trouble nowadays is that everyone is always in such a hurry. It dosent make sense that a 17yr old can pass a test in a micra and 2 weeks later be driving a 150mph suburu with virtually no experience. Young drivers if their cars were limited to 50mph for eg would be wasting their time racing each other as their cars would only go the same speed no matter which make of car they had and the speed should be set depending on experience and accident free driving.Something has to be done about the number of lifes lost needlessley and i think this is the answer.

I am not so sure that limiting the speed limit is the answer to all ills. I drive a lot, especially on the continent, and seeing the lines of HGVs which have to tail each other due to their speed limits does not inspire me. I would guess that traffic would grind to a halt more quickly if we all drove at 70mph, for example. The M25 only still works because at some stage one can increase speeds coming from it! I think that an increase to 80mph on motorways is not unreasonable, as this is what a large number of us are driving at anyway. I do not, however, advocate 'no speed limit' as in Germany on some stretches of their motorways. France has a limit of 80mph, Belgium and Holland have 75mph. I have not witnessed much 'speeding in these countries. Germany being the exception, as it has not top speed, after all it is the country of the Audi, the BMW, the Merc and the Porsche. If I were driving with my eyes closed I could tell when I have crossed into Germany, simply by the speed some overtaking vehicles are going at! I have only ever felt harangued on German motorways, even when I was travelling at their recommended speed of 80mph!
As to young drivers, I suggest a gradual increase in their speed 'allowance, and more lessons on motorway driving, although, I guess most of their accidents happen as they race each other down ordinary roads. |

I agree, the limit is 70, no excuse to go over it. It would help if cars had an engine related to driving at best economy at this speed too. Cars do'nt need large engines !.
Other than speeding, acceleration, what a nightmare. Give an idiot a car that does 0 to 60 in 6 seconds, he just has to try it at roundabouts etc. Its not needed, and its dangerous. There's an interesting inverse rule on the road too. The faster the cars go on motorways, the less room they have between them. Strange but true. |

The faster you go, the longer you have to wait in the queue.
The best way to stop speeding is to have transponders(like in aircraft and ships) in vehicles, that relays the make, model, reg, your speed and location via satelite to a central agency. Using GPS/Sat technology, the system will know exactly where you are and what the speed limit it is, therefore matching the two and your caught. No need for camera's at all, and the summons goes to the registered keeper. If the keeper cannot identify who the driver was at the said time/location, then they get fined/points. With this system being known to all, who would dare go over the limit? It will eventually pay for itself with the cut in RTC's and the health bill, and will also mean that police can concentrate and getting back to old fashioned policing. For the record, I ride motorbikes and have a 1.1 peugeout 206. Although at the opposite end of the speed scale, at the end of the day, they both can only do 70mph. ![]() |

My Dad is a lorry driver and the thing that really gets to him is the fact that he is restricted to 56mph, but foreign lorries are not. Also, what about coaches being restricted? Surely people count as precious cargo?
