Subject: Best Songs about Roads/Driving/Cars
Posted At: 07/07/2009 09:22:45
We've had "Best Driving Choons", but what are your best songs about roads, driving, cars or even spark plugs?
There's the obvious stuff like "Route 66" by Chuck Berry and various others, "Born to Run" by 'The Boss', "Bat out of Hell" by Meatloaf or "Driving in my Car" by Madness, but what other songs about the pleasures or pains of the road can you think of? |

How about "Wheels" by Emmylou Harris or "Under the Hood" by Billy Ray Cyrus? Or even "Brake Song" by Shinhwa...just to prove I'm not sitting here in cowboy boots and chaps!! To reinforce the point, there's always "Pull up to my Bumper" by Grace Jones.

Looking at the lyrics and knowing his style, I bet "Under The Hood" is a line-dancing favourite.
I never heard the Emmylou Harris song, but she's a good singer. A bit of a C&W Joni Mitchell. Shinhwa I've never heard of, but a quick Google shows them to be a Korean boyband! How cosmopolitan are you?! Grace Jones' song is a good one, but not to be listened to with your maiden aunt! Personally I like Elastica's 'Car Song'. Sung by Damon Albarn's old girlfriend Justine Frischmann, it contains the classic line "In every little Honda, there may lurk a Peter Fonda". Anyone got anymore? |

Well, a more obvious one would be "Cars" by the inimitable Gary Numan, who's still touring to this day, or "Mustang Sally" which was originally recorded by Wilson Pickett way back in 1965, but was given a new airing in the The Commitments sung by the incredible Andrew Strong.

All good choices. But. You'd have to get up early, prepare a flash of milky tea, a sandwich and some Kendall mint cake, to be in with any chance of beating the best song about cars ever: Austin Ambassador 'Y Reg' by John Shuttleworth.

Obviously, I meant to say "flask" in that previous message, and not "flash". It's ironic that I mentioned tea in connection with Mr Shuttleworth, as it appears that he's now advertising Yorkshire Tea on TV. That'll please Mary, his wife. She's been after a new three-piece suite for years.
Another good song about roads is Billy Bragg's jokey version of Route 66: 'A13, Trunk Road to the Sea', one of the few songs to mention Shoeburyness. |

Get serious. The driving song is "2468 Motorway" by the Tom Roninson Band.
if depressed "Road to Hell" Chris Rea...if lost "Road to nowhere" Talking Heads |
