Erm... yes, I guess so. The great thing is you can choose... potholes or road works. If you don't like potholes then I hope you are positive about roadworks.

If you see me swerving, it's pothole avoidance.

I agree with Norhthern Driver that we cant complain about Roadworks if we have issues with pot-holes. That said, I do think more can be done to improve roadwork warnings, diversion signs and to speed up the road works themselves - I would guess technology would help to make it possible for all pot hole repairs to be done within a 12 hour period.
One point often missed about pot-holes is the impact on cyclists. Although I am a driver commuter, I cycle at weekends and I think the roads are increasingly dangerous now - you do feel that you're left with a choice of swerving to avoid the pot hole (but into the trafiic lane) or taking your life in your hands by going over the pot - hole / broken surface and hoping for the best. The idea of naming and shaming local authorities sounds great. |

Archie needs to get a good mountain bike and hop over the pot-holes or indeed a 4x4.

Definately! And I must say I think the roads in Waltham Forest (NE London) are terrible. The road surfaces are not maintained and they're wrecked becuase so many utility companies have come and dug them up but botched up the repairs afterwards.
One thing that always surprises me though is how uneven the road surfaces are in Central London. On the odd occasions I drive to work, I feel like I'll be shaken to death driving down the Strand and High Holborn. Don't know what tourists must think! |

Actually No. I understand that the roads get neglected as do tonnes of other stuff today. But my strategy is to spot the offending pothole first and avoid it. To do this, though it will most surely be essential to reduce speed considerably, which I am more than willing to do.

Anybody noticed that the ramp off of the ring road from the A33 direction is showing it's normal signs of poor maintenance, cracks and potholes already this year. Would it be refreshing for Basingstoke & Deane to fix such problem spots prior to the hard wearing winter months for once.

The official line from what I was aware of was report potholes so the authority knows there's a problem. Legally, as long as it is part of a regular inspection routine, an authority could inspect a street once or twice a year. We see them develop on routes we drive along.
I was shocked when I contacted my local authority about a pothole that I had seen getting worse for about two months, that no one else had bothered to tell them. It had been fine when last inspected (about 4 months previously, just before the pothole had started to develop). |

I agree Kitkat,
But it could easily be one of the many Manhole/Drain covers that have been allowed to sink on one side, which they fill up with tar only for the traffic to push it all down the hole again, (us included if they get the chance)and so it continues. Or one of the many patches that are never ever finished to the same level as the rest of the road, there should be a fine for not finishing the road surface properly( we wouldnt allow a plasterer to leave our walls or ceilings in that state at home and after all we do pay for use of the roads. This year so far I have had untold punctures, 4 buckled wheels, and 7 broken spokes all this from commuting every day. ( and no kerb jumping involved, I leave that for the MTB at the Weekends. Name and shame --A13 into City of London, worste bit, (apart from the glass on the cycle lanes) the bus lane on the commercial road. Dory |

I do phone the Council about the potholes where I live,(just like Victor Meldrew!)They are always very polite, and log my calls, but cite lack of funds etc.for their failure to fix them.Aparently down my way a lot of the potholes are blown out from below by hydrostatic presure! Whatever, this not only makes big, deep holes, but also scatters loads of loose gravel across the road,(great for windscreens!.)The road surfaces are getting worse with every year that passes.

One of the worst stretches of roads for potholes must be the A348 from Longham Bridge to Bear Cross Bournemouth. Its only about 400 metres but there must be 20 to 30 potholes in the road - and its been like that since before the bad weather.
Have written to Bournemouth Borough Council (The Highways agency says its up to them) but got no reply. A real danger especially to those on two wheels. ___________________________________________________________ Lets be carfull out there Car over two litres ? You can afford it But can the Planet? |

Well here we go.......
If it ain't broke leave it. But if it is....................... The problem is the roads were never intended to carry all of us out there. But that is no excuse as we not going to start handing our cars back in - wasting planet or not. So lets have some top quality attention to mending roads and managing traffic. Stop the whinging and unacceptable trafic management. Remember mr Government we are paying for the priviledge of using roads not tracks!! |

If anyone has or drives on Isle of Wight roads they will know what an atrocious condition they are in, The road leading from the main Newport to Cowes route to Arctic road must fall into the category of Dangerous.Very large potholes, deep and several square feet in area.Temporary patches covering only the deepest of the hole
