Are they speed cameras or tax cameras etc??? Just a white van sitting on top of the flyover and 3 tripod cameras.... I thought they had to have signs up if they were using speed cameras as I never saw any signs...

Anyone know anything????

Yup, they're automatic number plate recognition cameras (ANPR) and are used to catch criminals - they run the number through the 'big computer' and it either just flags up criminal (suspect) activity or can be used by police on the ground to stop suspect cars. If you're clean they'll ignore you.

How do you know that Hogspotter? Are you an 'insider'? were you perhaps behind the camera?

Apart from the obvious tripod versions, how can you tell the difference between a traffic monitoring camera hanging from a bridge, camera high up on a pole over looking the motorway and a speed camera or are they one in the same?

As a law abiding (heavily taxed) motorist who travels the motorways of England I have always wondered.

Any ideas anyone?

High up on posts are usually monitoring. See www.speedcamerasuk.com/speed-camera-types.htm
for types and an idea what they look like.

Traffic monitoring cameras tend to be blue or green and only one per carriageway.

ANPR’s tend to be white and are set up as one per lane

Good on them - catch the uninsured, untaxed idiots and crush their cars.
