Don't think I really understand the question. Are you leaving a 30 zone to a national speed limit zone?
If the road is a national speed limit with no central reservation then you can do 60. |

actually if the road is national speed limit... the max speed is 60mph if there is one lane going in each direction (single carriageway, or country road) and 70mph if there is 2 or more lanes going in each direction (dual carriageway, motorway).

This amply demonstrates the impossibility of knowing what the speed limit is. How can anyone obey a speed limit if they don't know what it is? We need clearer and more consistent signing and speed limit policies.

The rules on sped limits are quite clear and simple if you only read your highway code. If you are not sure what they are read it now! Make sure you have a copy of the latest version 2009 seventh impression. All drivers should re read this ocassionally. Come on - be honest - when was the last time most of us did.
Equally, an advanced drivers course is well worth doing and soon shows how many bad habits most of us have got in to and teaches a different way of thinking to how you are driving. Think about it - if you are doing 10 mph over the limit consistently in a xx mph zone you are potentially achieving an extra ten miles in that hour. In 6minutes you have achieved a whole extra mile -wow! but the increased risk to you and other road users is massive. The increase in fuel consumption is greater, the wear on your vehicle higher and the stress on you driving greater. Stick to the limit allow adequate time and arrive safe and relaxed. |

A family member is in trouble due to an A40 camera - coming into London, from the M40, there's a sequence just after the airfield of Nat Speed Limit (I think 70, or do bigger overhead lights mean 60?), then a 50- sign, then a camera, then immediately afterwards another 50 sign. it's a classic trap to catch people who've been going at Motorway speed and then giving them very little time to slow down.
I'm going to claim that insufficient notice of the 50 zone was given. Do you think we've got a chance? |

I know exactly what you mean!!!
We have the Red Road between Camberley & Lightwater in Surrey. It has always been a national speed limit - single lane each way so 60. Recently from Camberley to Lightwater they have changed the limit to 40 for a few of the bends. There is no step back up to national despite the side roads being told they are entering a nat speed limit. Interestingly from Lightwater to Camberley it is national all the way!!! We also have a discrepancy on the A322 coming into Bagshot from Bracknell........you are in a 50, they want you doing 40 on the bend, so they put up at large 40 sign....but 20yds later they forgot to remove the small 50 sign & they forget to bump you back up to 50 for the rest of the road....so what speed should you be doing?? We also had an issue where a road I used daily suddenly had all the speed signs removed!! there were no posted limits for ages & then we had the warning signs posted 'don't play dirty stay under 30' etc....how can this be done without proper notice of the changes?? & no I don't have any points on my licence ![]() ![]() |

Paula, thank you for your kind words of support. I've now started to mount a defence based on this point, I'll let you know how I get on. But from past experience, the most likely path to avoiding this one will be The Law's Delay, because sometimes these things can drag on for so long that the authorities give up, without ever reaching a conclusion!
