I'm a bit confused. I'm driving to the French Alps this winter and have read that it is a requirement to carry snow chains and to use them when the conditions require it. However the manual for my car states that chains should only be fitted to a certain tyre and wheel size, the wheels I have on my car are larger than that specified in the manual. What should I do?

You shouldn't fit chains to the larger wheels as they might rub on parts of the suspension or brakes - you could end up causing all sorts of damage.

Sounds like your only options if you're going to be travelling somewhere with 'snow chains must be used' signs are to fit smaller wheels or use a different car.

I found this on the AA website too
