Improved street lighting can reduce crime by 30% and yet according to the AA more local authorities have been secretly switching off the lights. The AA claims this will lead to more car crashes and increased crime.

More statistics I see. What with the "can" reduce crime. Where's the facts? Not everybody benefits from street lighting but why don't we invest in solar lighting if it is a cost thing. You see these a lot in Europe

What Ed Kings comments don't take into account is the huge difference between those areas where they simply switch off the lights and those switch-off campaigns as in some parts of Buckinghamshire where modern state-of-the-art technologies like solar-powered road markings and lighting are used.
Maybe instead of lobbying to turn back on the lights, it would be more positive to lobby councils to switch to modern technologies instead? |

Solar powered lighting has to be the way forward, the current situation is untenable in the long-term. However, if it's a straight choice between lights on or off, I'd rather see a reduction in light pollution. People can adjust their driving habits and many of us drive on roads with no street lighting anyway. Judging by the amount of CCTV footage on TV most crime committed at night takes place in urban areas which are well lit.

Developing efficient lighting should be a priority, using LEDs instead of sodium or halogen lamps. This would reduce energy useage and the cost of replacing bulbs. However there is a set up cost, designing the street lights and installing them would cost millions which is why they're not doing it. Councils and governments always think short term.
In some areas lighting is not necessary but the condition of the road markings and cats eyes are so bad it's difficult to see where the road actually goes, not to mention which lane you are in. Some areas have very good high visibility markings, others is little more than a grey line down the middle of the road. What does our car tax actually pay for? |
