Do you agree with the decision in Swindon to scrap speed cameras?

It depends what they do to replace the cameras. All too often cameras are used as the first and last resort. The most worrying thing is that there has been a correlation between the increase in cameras and a 20% decrease in traffic police over the last decade in England and Wales. Ironically in Scotland traffic police levels have remained constant or indeed been increased in some areas.

Cameras are not a substitue for cops. They do nothing to deter the uninsured driver or drink/drugged driver. Traffic cops solve much general crime as criminals also use cars.

But cameras have made drivers think more about their speed particularly in urban areas.

Not really, although I don't know the local road conditions there.

What I think is that all cars should be fitted with a warning device - this would surely ensure lower road speeds at danger points and anyone shooting past a camera too fast would be willfully doing so, unlike the many who may not have noticed the speed limit amidst the plethora of other signs, for example.

Of course. Speed cameras have been scrapped in other parts of the world as well because it undermined peoples' confidence in the government and police. They're seen as highway bandits, robbing people of their money. They're quite obviously there to make money and little else, as evidenced by the fact that so many roads that receive new speed cameras have their speed limits reduced at the same time - it's very underhand.

It's infuriating because we already pay a lot more tax than we should. Quite simply, we do not get value for money and we resent having to pay more.

There are bigger, more worrying crimes than just speeding and we'd like our police to deal with them as well please. No more 'tutting' at Burglars and telling them if they do it again they'll be in trouble - lock them up!

From my experience average speed traps cause congestion as everyone is driving 5-10MPH slower than the speed limit to be safe (from being snapped).

Individual speed cameras are dangerous as often people see them at the last second and slam on. Sometimes even if they are within the limit, just as a reaction. Just look at the skid marks on the road near any gatso. (Of course it wouldn't be so dangerous if people didn't drive so close!)

I think they should remove speed cameras from motorways and national speed limit roads and keep them around schools, etc. Stop criminalising motorists who go a few mph over the limit, by all means hammer those who drive at mach 2.
Concentrate on catching uninsured/unliscenced drivers. I had to spend thousands learning to drive and insuring my car, why should they get away with it?
Catch drunk/drugged and dangerous drivers. Speed doesn't kill, it's the idiot behind the wheel that does.

Have a read of the government statistics on the causes of road accidents.

LESS than 5% are due to "breaking the speed limit", yet this is the only road enforcement we have in this country.

Get rid of the lot & put some traffic cops out and about in cars.

A camera cannot even prevent speeding, all it can do is send a fine out 2 weeks after the event - how can that possibly be in the interests of road safety?

Speed cameras are supported by doubtful statistics. Their presence slows drivers down but their main function is money raising! Ban the lot!

Why are 30mph limits not marked with repeater or reminder signs in the same way as 40 mph and 50 mph signs. Some 30 mph limits are on dual carriageways in non-residential areas whereas some 40mph limits are on single carriageways in built up areas. It just doesn't make sense except as a way of trapping people.
