'phantom' lanes

They have an experimental junction in Litherland (A59 Netherton way, boundary road, Dunningsbridge junction) where an extra lane suddenty appears just before the traffic lights if you're driving towards Ormskirk. The result is an extra queue of traffic (all those cars who 'jumped the queue') when the lights were on red.

Then when they change to green the two lanes then have to squash into one lane when they get to the other side of the junction!!

I can't understand the logic in creating a junction like this. Although it's supposed to be experimental it has been like this for some time now and i'm assuming it's now permanent.

There are other problems with the other exits on this junction and i believe it can be quite dangerous for more than one reason. Anyone else had a problem with this junction? (or perhaps none of you travel in this area)
