Having just returned from a six week trip around Eastern Europe where we paid a total of €250, (compared with annual UK road tax of £180), for the privelege of using motorways across at least six countries it occurred to me that there is a bit of an imbalance/injustice here, particularly as five of these countries are in the EU.

Our motorways are full of lorries from, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia and of course France. Many of these are actually bound for Eire, so not even delivering goods for our consumption. Why then, are they allowed to do this free of charge?

They are adding to congestion, causing accidents (tragically) and generally polluting our country and yet they are not taxed by our government?

I would like the AA to take this matter up with the government on our behalf.

The answer of course is very simple - a "landing" tax for lorries.

All of them come on either the chunnel or the ferry so it would be very simple to add it to the price of the ticket - make it payable only for trips starting abroad, so UK based hualiers are exempt.

Brown managed to so this overnight for joe public departing on a flight so it beats me why he hasn't taken this tax opportunity (he's taken every other one!)
