Try the Viaduc de Millau over the river Tarn in southern France

It may not be a great 'drivers' road but the road south of Mallaig, the A830, has got to be one of the most stunning in the UK - you go past Silver Sands, then continue to Glenfinnan. From there, it's a short drive to Fort William and Ben Nevis and down to Glen Coe.

Scotland has to be the best driving experience in the UK!!

Any long, straight, empty road in rural France...in the UK, A429 Cirencester to Cheltenham takes some beating - nice and curvy and usually quiet.

Come guys. There is no contest. The Pacific Coast Highway from San Fancisco to LA in a decenyt convertible is simply the best. Stop off at Carmel, Big Sur, Santa Barbara. Listen to Hotel California at full blast. Doesn't get much better.

Never driven in the US myself, but I understood all roads over there were pretty much straight... doesn't that get a bit boring after a while...

Whereas the A44 has some amazing bends, its also up in the hills so the views are fairly impressive... you definitely can't get bored on them (well unless you get stuck behind a tractor that is!!)

OK, i agree with 2468motorway - that is a great road - but don't bother with LA - San Fran is superior in every way.

may not be uk, but the best road i ever took was from Lake Takapo to Franz Josef glacier (the long way) via the southern alps of NZ. Unforgettable!

Staying closer to home, for a white-knuckle ride try the hardnott and wrynose (sp?) passes in Cumbria. For atmosphere, choose a murky, misty morning or evening to traverse Scotland from Inverness to Ullapool on the A835. Spooky.

That or the road to Mount Cook in New Zealand South Island is pretty amazing too, keep passing the same people taking photos all the way up.....

wrynose and harknott are cool and a bit white knuckle - especially if there's something coming the other way or a bike to overtake.

my best is the road from Alston across past the Hartside cafe and down the s-bends. did it once coming back from the lakes in mist - couldn't see more than 5 feet ahead. scary!

The wife and I really enjoyed the Icefields Expressway through the Rockies in Canada. Incredible mountains, huge forests, and those beautiful blue-green lakes full of glacial water. Wow indeed.

You can enjoy some beautiful views of the sea along the Jurassic coast on the B3157 coastal road between Lyme Regis and Weymouth, in Dorset. On a sunny day the sea simply sparkles, in any season.
