I have had the above car for 5 years (it is on a W plate 2000) and up to today I have got into the car put the key in the ignition and away I would go. However today when I tried to put the key into the ignition it would not go in. After investigation I realised that if I applied the steering lock the key went in without problems. Could this be a potential problem waiting to happen, or is this as it should be. and it has infact been faulty for all this time. Any advice would be welcome

Hi, mine is similar, I often have to "wiggle" the steering wheel (presumably removing the tension on the lock) before the key goes in. I've never thought is was an issue.

Your absolutely right, it is not an issue. It is caused by the steering lock: if the wheel is in a certain position, this happens. Funny you only noticed this after so many years. So waggle the wheel a bit and you're allright!

Hi All,
I`ve got a similar (worse) problem on my rover 75 (W plate): After not driving the car for about 5 months, I got in and found that the steering lock wasn`t on and I could hardly get the key into ignition, but finally managed after some serious jiggling around. I wonder if the steering lock somehow broke whilst parked up for 5 months.. and if it`s related. I can live without the steering lock, but the key proble is becoming a pain and I`m worried I`m doing more damage with all the wiggling. Any help/thoughts please? Can it be easiliy fixed? |
