I recently purchased a Dodge Nitro and the first time I used the 4x4 drive was in for a shock! The car lost power on the curves and then lurched in the direction of steer. When I called this in as a fault I was told that the Dodge will do this and I am risking damaging the transmission by driving it in 4x4 mode on roads with only patchy ice. In the UK I don't think I've ever seen a road which doesn't fall into their definition of patchy.
Needless to say the dealer is denying any responsibility for miss-describing their product, but I warn people to stay away from the Dodge or at least investigate it very thoroughly |

The Dodge Nitro has a 4x4 Lock type system. Meaning all 4 wheels are locked together and all turn at the same speed.
This is in the sales brochure. And is even noted on the 4x4 switch on the dash !. As with all 4x4 systems that do not have an active Diff, you can only use it on Mud, gravel, or heavy snow / ice. The problem arrises on dry roads when you try to turn a corner. Since all 4 wheels are rotating at the same speed you will have trouble steering and tear the tyres to pieces. This would not happen on a car with a 4x4 system with active differentials and clutches. Such as Range Rovers, Jeep Cherrokee, Jeep Patriot etc.... |
